Life Is Difficult

M Scott Peck begins his book, The Road Less Travelled, with this truth.

Admitting that life is difficult is not a pessimistic way of viewing life, but rather a realistic way of understanding our lives. Life can be difficult, but life can also bring great joy, connectedness and understanding. Many of us don’t want to accept the struggles as part of life and only want to experience the happiness. As a result, we can suffer greatly. At times we all need some help navigating our lives and there are many reasons we might want to seek individual therapy. We might experience depression, anxiety or sadness. These feelings may have been a part of our experience for a long time and we’re just now aware of the effect it has on our lives. We might be experiencing some suffering as a reaction to a traumatic life event, like the death of a loved one, a divorce, a sickness…or, we might be functioning at a high level, but know there are places we can grow. All of these are reasons someone might start therapy.vI work with all kinds of adults struggling with all kinds of issues and see safety, compassion, empathy, honesty and trust as the keys to my therapeutic process, and in turn, the potential for healing.
